Tasks to do

Since the beginning our organisation has based on volunteer work. Both local and international volunteers have been working together towards a common goal, to make this world of ours a little bit better place for everyone to live.

Currently it is possible to work as a volunteer at the bicycle flea-market, help in the office or do there own project:

Bicycle flea market

This is one of the most vital parts of the organisation. The public donates bike, where the volunteer chooses either to repair and sell the bike or use the bike for parts.

Office

Office-based tasks involve planning ships tour dates, organising campaigns, planning cultural events and finding international co-operation partners and working with them on our projects.

Own project

Volunteer's own project could be for example a theatre play, organising international work camps, study about environmental issues and present them.

Ship work

During the summer of 2007 the ship will be sailing however when the ship is in Turku, the volunteer(s) can do maintenance work on the ship. These tasks can be cleaning, painting, sewing sails etc.

The volunteer(s) will have 30 hours of work/week. Weekends are free. The volunteer will have normal holidays during Christmas, Eastern and other public Finnish holidays.
The volunteer(s) can work on different tasks depending on his/her own interest and capabilities.

S/v Estelle spends about 15% of the year sailing, and the volunteer(s) can take part on sailing trips, all though this is not his/her main task. During the year 2003 we where sailing apx. 100 days and visited 20 different harbours on the coast of Finland and the Baltic Sea. The longest period spend at sea was 6 days. During 2007 however the ship will be sailing, around Europe on the new campaign "Project 2007, Make Fair Trade Greener"

On board of the s/v Estelle there is a professional crew, who is responsible for ship's operation and safety. The volunteer(s) can assist the professional crew on their tasks in kitchen and on the deck. These tasks vary from ship's maintenance and repair work to sailing. Special safety training on tasks onboard s/v Estelle will be given by professional safety personnel. Possible longer working days onboard are compensated with free time when we get back on dry land.

If there are two EVS-volunteers, they can work on different tasks depending on their own interests and capabilities. For instance when one volunteer is onboard the s/v Estelle, the other one could work in our ground organisation keeping connections to our partners and press. When we are sailing on the coast of Finland it is possible to change tasks during the sailing tour.
