Estelle's Angola-project was a three-year development co-operation project, focused on informing people about the situation in Angola, Fair Trade and education them on more sustainable, ecological ways of life. Estelle exists to transport humanitarian aid with wind power across oceans, to encounter the sometimes harsh realities of the world and to share and exchange experiences with people coming from different cultural backgrounds.
The organisations behind the project were Uusi Tuuli ry, Maailmankauppojen Liitto ry and Emmaus Jokioinen ry in Finland, and in Angola ADRA , an NGO, and Minars, the ministry of social affairs of Angola.
The project launched in 2001 when s/v Estelle toured Finnish coastal towns informing people about Fair Trade and the situation in Angola as well as gathering donations of clothes, sewing machines etc. to be taken to Angola. We visited schools and talked about Fair Trade, Angola, Estelle and about the forthcoming trip and held open days on the ship.
In 2002, Estelle sailed to Angola with a full cargo of humanitarian aid, and returned back to Finland carrying a rich variety of valuable experiences from Angola. With the trip came knowledge of Angolan culture, stories, music and way of life.
The project's last operational year was 2003. Estelle made a return visit to the Finnish coastal towns she had visited two years earlier. We spoke about our trip and experiences, held exhibitions, hosted plays, showed slide and video shows, and sold Angolan products acquired using the principles of Fair Trade. We aimed to tell people where their donations went and how they got there, and how important it all was for the people who received them. We also visited schools and events.
