The project's purpose is to increase the awareness of secondary school students (14-18 years old) and of the general public on North-South relations and on how more sustainable development patterns can be created. The action will give the target groups a better understanding of the effects interdependence between developed and developing countries has on the environment. In particular, the project will increase the support given to Fair Trade both in the sense of concrete consumption choices and political support given to policies benefiting the development of the Fair Trade movement. The environmental benefits achieved through Fair Trade practices will also be better acknowledged. The project will strengthen popular support for actions and policies aimed towards more sustainable and equitable North-South relations, and inspire the target groups to participate in solidarity actions carried out by NGOs working with development issues.
The core of the action will consist of educational activities in secondary schools. Didactic materials and a concept for educational activities - including new and innovative methods such as the use of role games - will be developed and adjusted to local needs in the beginning of the action. The process will be based on sharing the expertise found in each partner organisation. Also the results of Uusi Tuuli ry's earlier co-operation with other Fair Trade and development organisations will be utilised - especially the materials and concepts developed with Cooperativa Sociale Pangea-Niente Troppo (Italy), Gaia Education Centre (Greece), and Koperattiva Kummerc Gust (Malta) during the project 'Make Fair Trade Greener', which started in 2007 and is co-financed by the European Commission.
During the two first years of the project, the Finnish Fair Trade sailing ship Estelle will be used to obtain attention from the media and the general public as well as from secondary school students and their teachers. Estelle will tour Estonia, Poland and Finland (and possibly some other Baltic Sea countries such as Lithuania) and in each harbour, local organisations working on development, Fair Trade and environmental issues will be invited to organise public events, such as small festivals and Fair Trade promotions on the ship. School classes will also be invited on the ship, where lessons on Fair Trade and environmental issues will be organised and an exhibition on related issues displayed.
Moreover, representatives from Fair Trade producer organisations will be invited to visit Estonia, Poland, Hungary and Finland. Related to the visits, public events will be arranged and media work done. The producers' representatives' visits will also make the impact of the educational activities in secondary schools stronger.
In order to enable mutual learning between organisations in different countries where Fair Trade is not strong yet, a forum will be created to facilitate the sharing of experiences and other co-operation. The forum will work by organising colloquiums and/or workshops on how to do awareness-raising and how to promote the development of Fair Trade in different national contexts. The forum will include members from Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Malta, Greece, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Italy. Hence, as a result of the action, European Fair Trade organisations in the respective countries will be more strongly networked and better equipped to implement awareness-raising activities.
