Fair trade, Mexico and the indigenous people 2009

The project is about the living conditions and culture of the indigenous peoples in Mexico, the threats on them and of social movements demanding a government more democratic and respecting of indigenous peoples' rights. The project is aimed to inspire Finnish people to support indigenous groups that are working to preserve their rights and their cultures.

In the project we focus especially on Fair Trade and other solidarity exchange as a way to improve the living conditions of the indigenous peoples. "Respecting and improving the human rights especially of women, children, indigenous people, disabled people and minority groups" is a part of the criteria of Worldshops for Fair Trade and often Fair Trade producer groups consist of indigenous people.
Inspiring examples of the possibilities of Fair Trade can be presented also in a larger geographical area than Mexico. In order to point out the global nature of the factors threatening the rights of indigenous people, also other peoples' than the Mexican indigenous peoples' situation may be focused on.

The project is also linked to a trip that is being planned to Mexico by Estelle the Fair Trade sailing vessel, and a development co-operation by Kansan Radioliitto that supports Oaxacan indigenous peoples' community radio work, and with Crash and Coalition for Environment and Development's co-operation with Wixarika communities. Through these projects also concrete possibilities open up for the target group.
Project's objective is to raise awareness about indigenous peoples' situation especially in Mexico and inspire to participate in the solidarity plan supporting indigenous peoples' rights. Target groups are activated to participate in spreding the information about the project's themes, particularly through internet.

The possibilities of Fair Trade for example preserving indigenous peoples' handicraft culture and improving general standards of living are acknowledged better which is shown in consumption choices as favoring Fair Trade products. The project raises public discussion about the global processes threatening indigenous peoples' rights and in that way improves taking indigenous peoples' rights in consideration in long term general trade and development politics.

In the project, besides Fair Trade, we give other practical possibilities for working for indigenous peoples' rights. In inspiring for voluntary work and other ways of making an impact, the project supports the preparation for Fair Trade sailing vessel Estelle's Mexico-tour, Kansan Radioliitto's development co-operation project that supports Oaxacan indigenous peoples' community radio work, University of Turku's board of students' development co-operation project done in the Wixarika communities and the co-operation of Crash and Coalition for Enviroment and Development with these communities.
