Make Fair Trade Greener 2007-2008

During 2007 and early 2008, Estelle and her host organisation Uusi Tuuli are realising a project called Make Fair Trade Greener, which was co-financed by the European Commission. The main activities of the project are Estelle's informational tour and educational activities organised in secondary schools.

The overall objective is to increase knowledge of and support for policies that are aimed to produce more equitable North-South relationships and environmental sustainability. The activities in secondary schools are planned and realised together with the official project partners: Pangea (Italy), Gaia (Greece), KKG (Malta) and Libero Mondo (Italy). Estelle's tour will be realised in co-operation with various different NGOs and other organisations.

At the core of the project is Estelle' awareness-raising tour to several Northern and Western European countries. In each harbour, local NGOs working on development, Fair Trade and environmental issues will be invited to organise public events, such as small festivals and Fair Trade promotions, with Estelle as the focal point and the main attraction.

This will enable different NGOs to gain visibility, share their experiences, and network locally, nationally and on a Europe-wide scale. The local hosts are also invited to organise creative attractions, such as street theatre performance, juggling, etc., to stimulate the interest of the general public.

An exhibition on Fair Trade, development and environmental issues will still be produced to be displayed on the ship. The exhibition will be open to the public and consist of photographs reflecting the history of Estelle, as well as of handicrafts and cultural items brought from Angola by Estelle. Videos of Estelle's work and Fair Trade will also be shown, and Estelle's crew and volunteers will give guided tours on the ship. School classes and other groups will be invited to visit the ship and lessons on
Fair Trade will be given to them there.

In Rostock, Estelle's visit will be timed together with the G8 meeting that will be held there. Also many other German and European NGOs will be present in Rostock organising different side events such as seminars and mass demonstrations. In the UK, Estelle will participate in celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slave trade.
Besides Estelle's tour, educational activities in secondary schools have been, and will continue to be, organised in Italy, Greece, Malta and Finland. The themes of the educational activities are Fair Trade and environmental sustainability, and special materials as well as a concept for organising the activities have been developed in co-operation with the different countries.

First of all, the project aims to increase awareness of students and the general public on North-South relations, and on how sustainable development patterns could be created. The project gives students and the general public a better understanding on the effects that the interdependence between developed and developing countries has on the environment. It will also increase popular support for actions and policies aimed towards more sustainable and equitable North-South relations, and inspire people to participate in solidarity actions carried out by NGOs working with development issues.

In particular, the project aims to increase support given to Fair Trade both in the sense of concrete consumption choices and in the sense of ideological support given to policies benefiting the development of the Fair Trade movement. The environmental benefits achieved through Fair Trade practices
will also be better acknowledged.
