Uusi Tuuli (New Wind) is a non-profit organization attempting to sustain the world's best traditions: community cohesion, hospitality, caring, fun, adventure and learning. The main objective of the organisation is to work as an ideological coalition to promote international solidarity, fair international economic arrangements, peace and mutual understanding between people and nations.
In order to promote these themes, the organization has renovated Estelle, owned by Eestaas Ltd, into a navigable, seaworthy sailing ship that can be used for promoting fair trade and transporting humanitarian aid from Europe to developing countries, and fair trade goods from developing countries to Europe. We at Uusi Tuuli have learned that both poverty and richness have been mainly created by trade, and that everyone needs to be given a chance to amend this situation. The activities of Estelle have already given rise to a new kind of exchange and trade between the North and the South.
Our primary target country is Finland. We would like to persuade more positive and proud "consumption runaways" to join us. This is essential, as the world's problems are caused mainly due to the rich, not the poor. Uusi Tuuli cooperates with other NGOs attempting to make the world a better place throughout Europe. As an example, Estelle's Mediterranean tour 2000 was carried out together with Southern European NGOs as a part of the Jubilee 2000 campaign, and the Angola project 2001-2003 was accomplished together with Finnish, European and Angolean NGOs.
Apart from the ship maintenance, the organization is also involved in various cultural and economical activities. It also participates in politically oriented activities related to traffic, for example by running a bicycle flea market in Turku at Aurinkotehdas. Being environmentally friendly is seen as equally important both on land and at sea.
We find mending bicycles and sewing machines, flying kites, indoors croquet, theatre, crafts, excursions on bike, and sailing as excellent ways of drawing people's attention to a new way of thinking. We attempt to create an open space for people to both act and think differently. The way one works defines also the way one lives. Therefore, it is important that the work one does is meaningful, and gives one feelings of learning and succeeding. Being involved in the organization's functions implies neither profit responsibility, nor constant presence. The only requirement is one's ability to live peacefully with others. For those interested in reforming the world, we offer voluntary work in our office, at the bicycle flea market and on Estelle. The shortest way to the ship, and through the ship to the world, is via the office and voluntary work. Do not hesitate to contact us!
The primary places of "business" are Estelle, the bicycle flea market and the organization's office in Turku at Aurinkotehdas.
